Our majority shareholder is Sanlam Life Insurance Limited. Sanlam is a diversified financial services group and is invested in Unique Welding Alloys through its Private Equity division. Sanlam is an involved investor participating in the strategic growth and governance of Unique Welding Alloys without getting involved in day-to-day operations.

Nazmi Adams

CEO and Executive Director

B.sc. (Chem) Eng, MBA

Nazmi has more than 25 years’ experience in the gases, LPG and welding industry. In addition to being General Manager, Sales & Marketing for Afrox, he also previously served on the Afrox (AOL) Board.

He was promoted to the BOC Group (UK) as Marketing Director for the global BOC Industrial Gases and welding business and later taking on the position as Global Marketing Director and Head of the Welding Consumables business for ESAB based in London. In addition, he was a shareholder and Director of Thombo Petroleum, an offshore oil and gas exploration company.

Nazmi returned to South Africa to assist in the transformation of the Afrox business and after a short retirement, took on the role of the Weldamax CEO in January 2017. 

Thomas Prins

Chairman BCom Hons CA (SA), CFA

Thomas completed his articles at Ernst & Young in 1995. From there, he joined Investec Bank as a Corporate Finance Consultant. He gained vast experience in capital raising and restructuring, listings and disposals. 

After executing a series of pre-IPO investments on behalf of Investec, his passion to establish long-term investments in unlisted companies was born, the culmination of which saw him help establish Investec Private Equity in 1999. 

Thomas left Investec in 2010 to pursue his own interests in the private equity industry. As Principal Investor and CEO of DP Capital, Thomas endeavours to assist management teams throughout Southern Africa acquire and grow the businesses they manage.

Thomas currently serves as Chairman on three boards, and acts as a director on one other.

Bukelwa Bulo

Executive Director

B Bus Sc (Finance and Accounting) Post Graduate Diploma Accounting; CFA, Program for Leadership Development (Harvard Business School).

Bukelwa is a founder and executive director of Jade Capital. She has over 12 years of experience in Investment Banking, having worked for 11 years in the Private Equity Division of Investec Bank Limited. She has obtained exposure to a wide spectrum of sectors including the hospitality, quick service restaurant, industrial services, engineering, retail and wholesale sectors.

Bukelwa has served as a non-executive director on the boards (and board committees) of the following companies: Franki (Pty) Ltd, Plumblink (Pty) Ltd, Kumnandi Food company (Pty) Ltd, Anglo V3 Crane Hire (Pty) Ltd, Elcon Cranes and Construction (Pty) Ltd, Protea Hospitality Holdings (Pty) Ltd, Metaf Investment Holdings and The Business Place (eQonce). She has also represented Investec Bank Limited as an observer on the boards of Kensani Corrections (Pty) Ltd, African Revival Investment Holdings (Pty) Ltd, Tsiya Radio (Pty) Ltd, Tsiya Group (Pty) Ltd, and Shanduka Group (Pty) Ltd.

Bukelwa is a non-executive director on the board of Unispan Holdings (Pty) Ltd, and is also a member of the Women’s Property Network in Gauteng.

Natalie holds a BA LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand. She was admitted to practise as an attorney, notary and conveyancer by the High Court of South Africa in 2000 and spent a number of years in practice in firms in Johannesburg before spending some time abroad.

On her return to South Africa in 2010 she made the move to corporate, joining The Standard Bank of South Africa Limited in 2011, where she worked as a legal manager in various divisions for a period of some 3 years before starting at Sanlam Capital Markets (Proprietary) Limited in the role of legal advisor in 2013.

Natalie advised both the debt team as well as the private equity division of Sanlam Life Insurance Limited, before permanently taking up the position as the dedicated legal counsel for Sanlam Private Equity in November 2016.

Zola Ntwasa

Non-Executive Director

B-Comm (Honours in Accounting) CA(SA).

Zola is a founder and executive director of Jade Capital Partners. She was previously a director in the Real Estate Finance Division of Standard Bank, heading up the New Business Team, where she was a member of the Executive Committee and the Deal Approval Committee.  

Prior to this, she was an Investment Banker having held roles in the BEE Finance and Investments Division of Standard Bank and as a Corporate Finance Consultant at Investec Bank Limited.

Zola serves as a non-executive director on the board of Hospitality Property Fund, Sasol Inzalo, Grindrod Bank and Grindrod Limited. She is a South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA) board member and was the 2014 Chairperson of the Women’s Property Network (Gauteng).

Anil Maharaj

Non-Executive Director

Anil represents Sanlam Private Equity on the board of Weldamax and has over 15 years of private equity deal making experience. 

Prior to joining Sanlam, Anil was a director at Brait’s private equity business. Anil qualified as a chartered accountant in South Africa, before spending some time abroad at Ernst & Young’s corporate finance division in London.

Chris Adams

Head of Supply Chain and Operations

With over 10 years’ experience in the Logistics and Supply Chain industry, Chris has controlled numerous aspects of the supply chain including expediting, forwarding and clearing of product, bonded and duty paid warehousing, and primary & secondary transport. Chris now heads up the entire Weldamax supply chain, making sure that the movement of products and gas is as seamless as possible. He controls all logistical aspects, from local and international procurement, through to receiving, warehousing and deliveries in all 14 branches. With the bulk of the company’s staff under his instruction, managing stress is just one part of his job profile!

Thomas Taljaard

Head of Sales and Marketing

Thomas joined Unique Welding at the end of 2000 as a Sales Executive, worked his way up to Branch Manager, and subsequently National Operations Manager. Now charged with the role of Head of Sales and Marketing, Thomas is responsible for the overall growth of the groups targeted markets. He is a strong, focused leader with a great team behind him, and is always available with advice and support. Thomas is famous for achieving record-breaking month-end sales targets, and does not stop pushing his team until the very last second!

Sue Kaplan

Head of IT and Commercial

Sue started out as a software support consultant employed by Magic Software (Pty) Ltd in 1990. One of her first assignments was to support the accounting system utilised at Maxweld & Braze. In 1996 she became a 50% owner/director of Magic Software. In 2008 Sue joined the Weldamax group as the IT Manager. Together with her team she is responsible for support on the ERP systems utilised at head office and across the group. In addition to this the IT department manages the infrastructure, WAN and communications throughout the Weldamax group.

In August 2017 Sue’s role was enhanced to include the Head of Commercial role. In this role she analyses data, implements new & improved business processes and guides the business forward in all spheres.

Hemalini Kunthanlal

Head of Finance

Hemalini was the General Manager Finance and Country Head for Cure Chem (Pty) Ltd and previously Financial Manager for Savannah Fine Chemicals (Pty) Ltd. Both organisations are primary importers and distributors of chemicals and thus she has extensive experience in product importations, forex hedging, cash management and margin improvement. She has a strong background in financial controls, statutory compliance, cost management and corporate governance. Hemalini is a graduate Chartered Secretary with Associate Membership and has also obtained an MBA degree.
